Scrapbooker Problems

You know how there are first-world problems? There are also scrapbooker problems, and I decided to scrapbook about one of them: Thickers, Thickers, everywhere. They aren’t a problem by themselves–in fact, I love them–but they do tend to sneak onto clothes and then fall off somewhere. So then I’ll later find a “q” outside in the back yard (this really happened) or a “k” in my bedroom (ditto; see the photo below).

Scrapbooker Problems

I took several sets of Thickers where I had used up all the vowels and placed them on a gessoed piece of white cardstock. Then, I covered everything with light blue paint. I love the effect this created.

As for the stash, the blue blueprint paper is more than 10 years old. Some of the gessoed Thickers and the stickers are also from the stash as well.

Feel free to check out my process video below. And I’d love to hear about your scrapbooker problems!

Take Two

I was checking the Victoria Marie Facebook group page  when I saw that one of this week’s challenges is to scrapbook about friendship. That is easy enough to do. I chose this pic of me and three coworkers and got to work (ha ha!).

Take Two

When it came to choosing a background color for this photo, I had a Goldilocks moment. The black patterned paper was too dark (though I use it as a strip along the top); white cardstock (my second choice) was too light. This light white/pale gray color I eventually chose ended up being just right. Plus it’s from a Tim Holtz paper pad that I’ve had for a while, and I LOVE using older products.

Which brings me to a list of the stashy items I used: the Tim Holtz paper, the pink vellum, the round sticker at the top of the page, and the yellow/pink flower diecut.

One of my biggest challenges when it comes to scrapping photos of friends is coming up with a title. I really don’t want 152 layouts that use “Friends” as the title, so my objective was to come up with something else. I ultimately went with “Take Two” because this was the second group photo we took. I explain things a bit more in the process video for this page, which you can see by clicking on the image below.

Hope you enjoy! I love the layers on this page, and the flair is fun too. So . . . challenge completed, and one more page is ready to go into an album. That alone makes it a success.

Oh, Hello!

Hello, and welcome to Getting Scrap Done! This is where I share my scrapbook pages and talk about ways to get what’s in your scrappy stash onto finished pages.

newdo1

Since we’re chatting, I’ll tell you a little about myself. I’m Alyssa, and I’ve been gluing photos into albums since I was in middle school. I started doing traditional scrapbooking in 1998, and I’ve been scrapping—and doing scrappy shopping—ever since. I’ve had years where I scrapbooked very little (if at all), but I’ve never had a year where I didn’t add supplies to my stash.

In 2008, I started a blog where I posted about my life. I started scrapbooking again (after a bit of a hiatus) and began sharing photos of my pages there. While I love playing with new scrappy products, I started what I call a stashometer to encourage me to use items from my stash. In early 2015, I discovered scrapbook process videos on YouTube. In August 2015, I posted my first process video of my own.

And that’s how Getting Scrap Done was born. It started as a YouTube channel and I decided it needed a website to match. What you’ll see in both places is a girl who loves scrapbooking and wants to use up some of the stuff she’s bought in the last 15 years. I will share process videos, photos, and tips. I’m also hoping to create a gallery for my scrapbook pages. This will take time, and I’ll let you know as I add things.

So, let’s begin. It’s time to start Getting Scrap Done!

On the Case

I’ve taken up another new hobby: Criminal Case, a game on Facebook. The journaling pretty much sums it up, so here’s the page.

I initially used a different paper for the background, and that’s how I ended up with the yellow and blue color scheme. I changed the background paper but kept the other colors. I was nearly done with this layout until I remembered the paper scrap with the people on it, and it turned out to be a good match colorwise. So that was the last addition I made to this page. I made it for the smaller photos challenge on Shimelle’s site.

I got the swivel stick embellishments with a kit I bought and was at a loss for how to use them. When I saw they worked with the color scheme, I pulled a few of them out.

Do you play any games (on Facebook or otherwise)? Or have you scrapbooked another hobby? Please share in the comments.

My Daddyo

I am blessed to have my dad still in my life. He lives nearby, so I see him every week or two and sometimes more often. I made this page for him for Father’s Day.

I embossed the letters and painted the stars and love the way everything turned out. Even better was my dad’s response to the layout. He said he liked the photo and smiled as he read the journaling. Happy Father’s Day, Dad.

Only an Aunt

Long time no post. 🙂 So I’ll dive right in. When it comes to two-page sketches, I really love the sketches from Let’s Scrap. So naturally I used it with these fun photos.

It is such a delight to be part of this girl’s life. I found the saying about aunts on a scrapbooking site and think it really works for this page. No stashometer rating, but it was fun to create a girly page.

Do you have favorite sites for scrapbook sketches?

Bring On the Chocolate

When I was a subscriber of Club Scrap, I got a kit one month that was packed with chocolate-themed products. Looked like fun, I thought, but I had a couple of problems. One, I had a stack of Club Scrap kits I hadn’t used so the stuff was buried. And two, I am not a big fan of chocolate. Don’t get me wrong: I like things like Snickers or Reese Sticks. Even chocolate milk as long as I dilute it with regular milk. But brownies, chocolate ice cream, plain chocolate bars, etc. I can do without. I know, I know. I’ve had many people tell me how weird that is, but what do you do? My sweets addiction is ice cream, not chocolate.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when I got some photos printed. Chocolate played a prominent part in the photographs as did mustaches. So I decided it was time to dig out that Club Scrap paper and see if it would work. It was even better than I anticipated as you can see.

I never thought I would use mustache embellishments on anything, but they suited this layout. And I finally put my chocolate paper to use. In fact, the stashometer rating is 49%. All the paper I used is from my stash. Sweet!

As for the chocolate mustache . . . I didn’t eat mine. I let my sister and niece have it. Weird, I know. I’m sure I had some ice cream later though.

College Girl

I have been trying to clear off my scrapbook desk but keep getting distracted. This time by this layout that I’ve been wanting to redo for a while.

The unfinished page. Great colors but no embellishments.

I loved the background paper and still do, so I wanted to keep that. But I wanted a more interesting title and a less monochromatic look. So here’s what I ended up with.

The updated version. I love how the photo pops off the page. This is still a monochromatic layout, but there’s much more contrast, which makes the page more interesting.

I started with a Page Maps sketch but ended up changing things quite a bit. I am quite happy with the addition of the lighter colors. I think it really helps the photo stand out more. And I got to keep the original patterned paper background, although I tore it a little when I pulled up the other pieces. Luckily it was easy enough to cover it up with the lighter paper.

So that’s the new layout. What do you think of the difference?

April Showers Bring May Snow

The weather is always a bit weird where I live. I’ve often used the heat and air conditioning in the same day. This was a new kind of crazy for the year, though, and the title says it all.

I used a Page Maps sketch for this layout, and the stashometer rating is pretty high: 55%. I have started to use a new system to organize some of my embellishments, and it makes it easier to find ones that will work on my layout. I will post about what I’ve done later this week, after I have a chance to take some good photos.

Have you had any May storms where you live?

Acquaintance, Pal, Friend

I didn’t get a whole lot done on the actual interNational Scrapbook Day (NSD), but I’ve been slowly scrapping my way through the week. Here’s a two-page layout I did about a work acquaintance/pal/friend.

I’ll try to get a non-glary picture of the right hand page, but I wanted to post it anyway. I did it for Shimelle’s challenge to do a two-page layout. Here’s how it looks as a spread.

I used a sketch from Let’s Scrap and pulled out some butterfly patterned paper I’ve been wanting to use for a layout. I bought a few sheets of this and I’m glad, because I am excited to use it again. 🙂 I also pulled out some new flair to use as embellishments on the page.

I did use one item from the stash: the yellow sticker that says “life.” I also created some custom letters by embossing some chipboard Thickers. You can still see a faint trace of the grid pattern on the base, but that just adds character.
